Answer

Risk factors for degenerative calcific aortic stenosis include advanced age, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, and smoking. The available data suggest that the development and progression of the disease are due to an active disease process at the cellular and molecular level that shows many similarities with atherosclerosis, ranging from endothelial dysfunction to, ultimately, calcification.
