Answer

Answer

The preferred initial form of therapy for anemia of chronic illness is treatment of the underlying disease. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and blood transfusions are reserved for severe and symptomatic cases. Administration of ESAs is usually best done under the auspices of a hematologist or nephrologist, who may be more informed regarding the latest guidelines on the uses of such agents, as well as for insurance policy coverages.
