Answer

Vitamin D insufficiency contributes to osteoporosis by decreasing intestinal calcium absorption. [8, 39] Treatment of vitamin D deficiency has been shown to improve bone mineral density. [40, 41] An analysis of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) demonstrated a positive correlation between circulating 25(OH)D levels and bone mineral density. [42]
