Chronic hypertension complicates approximately 1 in 10 diabetic pregnancies overall. [21] Women with gestational diabetes are at a significantly higher risk of developing hypertension after the index pregnancy. [25] Patients with underlying renal or retinal vascular disease are at a substantially higher risk, with 40% having chronic hypertension. Patients with chronic hypertension and diabetes are at increased risk of intrauterine growth restriction, superimposed preeclampsia, abruptio placentae, and maternal stroke.
