Answer

Surgical interventions that may be considered include the following:

  • Precocious puberty – Oophorectomy or ovarian cystectomy, when medical therapy fails

  • PFD – Traction or fixation for fractures; for most PFD lesions, routine removal is not warranted

  • Hyperthyroidism – Thyroidectomy (partial near-total, or total)

  • Infantile Cushing syndrome – Bilateral adrenalectomy

  • Gigantism or acromegaly – Surgical removal of the offending lesion (pituitary adenoma) is rarely curative and is considered only if the tumor is threatening vision (in consultation with an experienced base-of-skull neurosurgeon)
