In separate studies, Rosendaal, Kearon, and Bulger et al analyzed the relative contribution of individual risk factors to the development of DVT. [49, 50, 51] When more than one risk factor is present, the risk is cumulative; however, no good model suggests how the individual risk factors interact. [52] Nonetheless, several attempts have been made to quantify the risk factors associated with VTE. [53] The use of a checklist to stratify patients and assign them to categories of relative propensity for DVT development is helpful in deciding on an appropriate treatment regimen (see below).
