Which neurotransmitters are generated in CNS nuclei relative to narcolepsy?

CNS nuclei for wakefulness and the relevant neurotransmitters generated in those nuclei include the following:

  • Locus ceruleus – Norepinephrine

  • Raphe nucleus – Serotonin

  • Tubomammillary nucleus – Histamine

  • Ventral tegmental area – Dopamine

  • Basal forebrain – Acetylcholine

These areas also inhibit REM sleep.
