The International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICSD-2) [43] classifies insomnia into 11 categories, as follows:

  • Adjustment insomnia (acute insomnia)

  • Psychophysiologic insomnia (primary insomnia)

  • Paradoxical insomnia

  • Insomnia due to medical condition

  • Insomnia due to mental disorder

  • Insomnia due to drug or substance abuse

  • Insomnia not due to substance or known physiologic condition, unspecified

  • Inadequate sleep hygiene

  • Idiopathic insomnia

  • Behavioral insomnia of childhood

  • Primary sleep disorders causing insomnia
