In humans, serum T4 and T3 levels fall shortly after the onset of clinical infection. This reflects decreased TSH stimulation of the thyroid, decreased thyroidal secretion, accelerated T4 disappearance, and inhibited hormone binding to transport proteins. With recovery, TSH release resumes, and T4 and T3 levels progressively rise.
