Patients on metformin have shown significant improvements in hemoglobin A1c and their lipid profile, especially when baseline values are abnormally elevated. In addition, metformin is the only oral diabetes drug that reliably facilitates modest weight loss. In the UKPDS, it was found to be successful at reducing macrovascular disease endpoints in obese patients. [138] The results with concomitant sulfonylureas in a heterogeneous population were conflicting, [139] but overall, this drug probably improves macrovascular risk.
