Referral to a podiatrist is indicated for diabetic patients with any of the following:

  • Distal sensory neuropathy with inability to feel a pinprick or light touch

  • Decreased peripheral pulses

  • Moderate-to-severe onychomycosis

  • Impending skin breakdown
