Controversy surrounds the question of whether severe hypoglycemia in youths with type 1 DM has lasting cognitive consequences. In a follow-up to the DCCT, recurrent and chronic hypoglycemia was linked to cognitive dysfunction. [82] In another study, however, electroencephalography (EEG) and cognition studies were performed at baseline and 16 years later in patients with type 1 DM, and no association between early severe hypoglycemia and subsequent reduced adult cognition or EEG changes was found.
