Which questions regarding foot disease should be asked of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM)?

The possibility of foot disease should be addressed. Inquire as to whether the patient has a history of foot ulcers or amputations or whether any foot ulcers are present. (See Diabetic Foot Infections.)

The possibility of infection also should be considered. Be sure to inquire about whether frequent infections are a problem and, if so, at what sites.
