Answer

A study by Pai et al indicated that in adults with type 2 diabetes, an association exists between variability in fasting plasma glucose and the risk for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Using the coefficient of variation (CV) for fasting plasma glucose, the investigators found that, after consideration of HbA1c, the odds ratios for the development of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy were 4.08 and 5.49 for the third and fourth CV quartiles, respectively, compared with the first quartile.
