Long-term neurologic sequelae from uncomplicated viral meningitis are rare. Sequelae in children (especially infants and young children), as reported in the literature, include the following:

  • Seizure disorders

  • Hydrocephalus

  • Sensorineural hearing loss

  • Weakness

  • Paralysis

  • Cranial nerve palsy

  • Learning disabilities

  • Blindness

  • Behavior disorders

  • Speech delay
