The following are imaging studies used in the evaluation of suspected HSE:

  • MRI of the brain: The preferred imaging study

  • CT scanning of the brain: Less sensitive than MRI

  • EEG: Low specificity (32%) but 84% sensitivity to abnormal patterns in HSE
