Risk factors for bleeding in anticoagulated patients include the following:

  • Hepatic or renal disease

  • Ethanol abuse

  • Malignancy

  • Old age (>75 years)

  • Rebleeding

  • Reduced platelet counts or platelet dysfunction

  • Hypertension that is uncontrolled

  • Anemia

  • Genetic factors

  • Elevated fall risk

  • Stroke
