Oxidative stress may contribute to the development of TD. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an endogenous antioxidant, is hypothesized to function as a neuroprotective agent against TD. A genetic basis to protect against the development of TD through the endogenous production of DHEA has not been confirmed.
