Physiologic imaging studies (eg, PET and SPECT) of patients with TD may demonstrate increased glucose metabolism in the globus pallidus and the precentral gyrus. PET may help differentiate TD and other disorders with minimal gross cerebral structural changes [18] from disorders with characteristic findings on neuronuclear imaging. [52, 53] Amelioration of TD resulting from the administration of quetiapine can be confirmed by the demonstration of increased uptake of the dopamine transporter (DAT) verified by SPECT. [6, 54, 55]
