Early ocular complications include the following:

  • Lagophthalmos (inability to close the eye completely)

  • Paralytic ectropion of the lower lid

  • Corneal exposure

  • Brow droop

  • Upper eyelid retraction

  • Decreased tear output/poor tear distribution

  • Loss of the nasolabial fold

  • Corneal erosion, infection, and ulceration (rare)
