Transmission from mother to child in utero relates to HIV/HBV co-infection and density of viral infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV). While particle density of HCV infection of approximately 100 particles per milliliter produced no vertical transmission to the baby, 1 million HCV particles per milliliter resulted in a transmission rate of 36%. [87] Overall, transmission to babies was 6% in mothers who were HCV-antibody positive and 10% in mothers who were HCV-RNA positive.
