The evidence of benefit notwithstanding, there remains some debate about the use of antivirals in this setting. For example, a study by Kubeyinje concluded that acyclovir did not decrease acute pain duration or the incidence of complications in healthy young adults with typical herpes zoster. [104] However, these results cannot be extrapolated to the elderly, who are at greater risk of PHN.
