Episodic treatment for recurrent herpes labialis in immunocompetent patients is as follows:

  • Acyclovir 200-400 mg PO 5 times a day for 5 days

  • Valacyclovir 2000 mg PO every 12 hours for 1 day

  • Famciclovir 1500 mg PO as a single dose

Episodic treatment for recurrent herpes labialis in HIV-infected/immunocompromised patients is as follows:

  • Acyclovir 400 mg PO 3 times a day for 5-10 days

  • Valacyclovir 1000 mg PO twice daily for 5-10 days

  • Famciclovir 500 mg PO twice daily for 5-10 days
