The following are contraindications for standard closed reduction of a posterior shoulder dislocation:

  • Delayed (>6 weeks) presentation
  • Large humeral head defect
  • Displaced or multipart fracture-dislocations - These are treated with open reduction and internal fixation or with arthroplasty
