Apocrine sweat glands are stimulated by androgen and suppressed by estrogen. Evidence for the hormonal effects in hidradenitis suppurativa exists; however, the exact roles of androgens in the pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa remain controversial, and they may prove to be secondary.
