CT scanning may provide additional diagnostic information regarding the presence of coexisting illness, such as perforated esophagus. Dissanaike et al noted that major injuries to the aerodigestive tract were readily identified on chest CT scans performed in adult patients with blunt trauma and pneumomediastinum. [34]
