Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that predominantly affects the colonic mucosa. The condition typically follows a relapsing-remitting course and is characterized by the symptoms of abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Patients may also experience fatigue, weight loss, and rectal bleeding as well as extraintestinal manifestations. Current therapy is aimed at reducing symptom burden and maintaining disease quiescence. The Advances in Ulcerative Colitis Special Report series is a CME-certified collection of activities that focuses on recent developments and advances in the understanding, assessment, and treatment of this chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Each CME activity includes links to original clinical content, including expert columns, articles, case reports, and literature reviews, all of which are written by leading authorities in the field.
