Target Audience

This activity is intended for hematologists, oncologists, and other clinicians who provide care for patients at risk for or with thrombocytopenia.

Goal

The goal of this activity is to provide up-to-date information on the management of thrombocytopenias, including current and investigational treatments for thrombocytopenia in patients with leukemia.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology of thrombocytopenia associated with leukemia
  2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of platelet transfusion for the treatment and/or prevention of thrombocytopenia in patients with leukemia
  3. Cite currently available data about the mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of thrombopoiesis-stimulating proteins and other investigational treatments for thrombocytopenia

Credits Available

Physicians - maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) for physicians;
Nurses - 1.0 nursing contact hours (0.5 contact hours are in the area of pharmacology);
Pharmacists - 1.0 ACPE continuing education credits for pharmacists (0.1 CEUs)

All other healthcare professionals completing continuing education credit for this activity will be issued a certificate of participation.

Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
