Target Audience

This activity is intended for all physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in health literacy.

Goal

The goal of this activity is to offer clinicians the latest information about limited health literacy and to identify the communication skills and clinical interventions that may improve health communication for all patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define health literacy and review how limited health literacy may affect the quality of healthcare
  2. Examine the relationship between health literacy and patient safety
  3. Identify those communication skills and clinical interventions that may improve health communication for all patients
  4. Review clinical care strategies that may improve care for those populations most vulnerable to the effects of limited health literacy

Credits Available

Physicians - maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) for physicians;
Nurses - 0.5 nursing contact hours (None of these credits is in the area of pharmacology)

All other healthcare professionals completing continuing education credit for this activity will be issued a certificate of participation.

Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
