Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss efficacy and side effect profiles of antibiotics that have been recently approved or are in phase III clinical trials
  2. Describe how the problem of hospital antimicrobial resistance impacts their clinical practice environments
  3. Based on clinical guidelines, likely pathogens, and the patient's specific medical history and clinical presentation, implement initial management strategies for patients with, or at risk for, bacterial infections
  4. Use culture data to determine ongoing management for a patient with a bacterial infection
  5. Obtain cultures in order to conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing and use that data to determine definitive therapy for a patient with a bacterial infection
  6. Evaluate the appropriate use of the local antibiogram for their institutions to determine empiric therapy for their patients with bacterial infections
