Adjuvant hormonal therapies for breast cancer, particularly nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors, can cause loss of bone mineral density. Zoledronate, a high-potency third-generation bisphosphonate, can help prevent bone loss and fractures. Studies suggest that zoledronate given in conjunction with adjuvant hormonal therapies for breast cancer can help eliminate this side effect. In addition, in patients with bone metastases, zoledronate has been shown to reduce the number of skeletal-related events, such as pathologic fracture and spinal cord compression.
Researchers at the 25th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium presented the latest data on the use of zoledronate to maximize bone density in patients with breast cancer.
