Contents
The 2000 NIH Consensus Conference on Adjuvant Therapy for Breast Cancer advocated the use of anthracycline-containing regimens, such as cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and fluorouracil (CAF) or cyclophosphamide, epirubicin, and fluorouracil (FEC), over non-anthracycline-containing regimens, such as cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil (CMF) because of a statistically significant survival advantage. However, anthracycline-based therapy can contribute to cardiotoxicity, especially when used in conjunction with trastuzumab. Therefore, the evaluation of taxane-based regimens that might be equivalent or better than anthracycline-based regimens is under way.

Research presented at the 25th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium discussed the use of taxane-based therapy in patients with breast cancer, in the neoadjuvant, first-line, and second-line settings.
