Policies for Developing Continuing Education Activities

Medscape is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education, the ANCC to provide continuing nursing education, and the ACPE to provide continuing pharmacy education. As an accredited provider, Medscape develops online CME/CE activities in compliance with our accrediting agencies, AMA, HHS-OIG, FDA, AdvaMed, and PhRMA guidelines and codes.

Professional education activities [CME, CE] are developed by Medscape Professional Editorial Staff and reviewed by Continuing Professional Education Staff of Medscape, LLC before publication.

Commercial activities [promotion and advertising of products regulated by the FDA] are developed by the WedMD promotional staff of WebMD Professional Services, a separate company from Medscape LLC.

Guiding principles include:

  • Medscape Editors control all CME and CE content certified by Medscape.
  • Medscape Grant Specialists are Professional Editorial Staff authorized to submit grant requests to commercial supporters’ Professional Education Units.
  • Topic selection is based on the needs of health care professionals in specialties served by Medscape.
  • Authors and Editors must disclose potential conflicts of interest and mention of investigational drugs or unapproved uses; disclosures are posted online.
  • Participant evaluations and comments are monitored; Editors can update content.
  • Commercial support is acknowledged online.
  • Collaborating CME/CE Providers receive monthly data reports.
