IAPAC European Sessions 2006: Slide Sets
Editor's Note: The International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) convened the "IAPAC European Sessions" in Budapest, Hungary, October 12-13, 2006. IAPAC Sessions, held annually in North America, Europe, and South Africa, are unique symposia that allow HIV-treating healthcare professionals to benefit from the collective knowledge and experience of their peers and to work toward solutions to ongoing clinical challenges. Broad topical areas addressed at this meeting included:
- Implications of a Decade of HAART;
- Navigating Antiretroviral Drug Resistance;
- Sociobehavioral Aspects of HIV Care; and
- Emerging Issues in AIDS Care.

EuroSIDA: What Do the Numbers Tell Us?
Jens Lundgren, MD, presents data from the 14,400-patient study that explores the benefits and risks of HAART. Do we know yet when to start HAART?
10 Years of Progress: State of the HAART
Jose M. Zuniga, MSPH, PhD, looks at the history of AIDS, from the "dark ages" through the first decade of HAART.
Future Directions in HAART
Schlomo Staszewski, MD, examines strategy trials of currently approved antiretrovirals (ARVs) and looks at what the future may hold in terms of ARV resistance, novel strategies, and new ARV classes.
The Role of Newly Approved and Investigational ARV Drugs
Jurgen Rockstroh, MD, PhD, discusses the nature and definition of "treatment failure" and how to achieve "success" after "failure" through the use of newly approved and investigational ARVs.
Is There a Future for Structured Treatment Interruptions?
The "SMART" treatment interruption study showed that treatment interruptions weren't safe. Bernard Hirschel, MD, looks at updated information from SMART and other STI trials. Has anything changed?
Prevention With Positives
Gus Cairns discusses the dearth of prevention strategies aimed at HIV-positive people and examines data on behaviors that may reduce transmission: testing, serosorting, disclosure, and more.
Promoting Adherence to HAART
Carmina Fumaz, MS, discusses some of the factors that can erode adherence to HAART and how the concerns or determining factors can be addressed by the healthcare team.
Addressing Substance and Alcohol Abuse in HIV-Positive Patients
Fabrizio Starace, MD, PhD, looks at the interplay between HIV, substance use, and psychiatric disorders. Treatment of underlying substance use disorders has a powerful effect on HIV infection rates.
Adolescents and HIV: The Unmet Challenge
Carlo Giaquinto, MD, examines the special needs of adolescents -- a challenging medical care scenario becomes more complex with HIV infection, whether newly or neonatally acquired.
Hepatitis B/C Coinfection: Doubling the HIV Management Challenge
Stefan Mauss, MD, discusses HIV/viral hepatitis coinfection, including treatment challenges engendered by polymerase inhibitors active against both HIV and HBV, and difficulties in treating HCV.
Putting Nonoccupational PEP Into Practice: What Are the Implications?
Jesus Almeda, MD, describes the demand for postexposure prophylaxis as "not negligible" in Europe. What's the evidence that it might work? Registry results and guidelines provide some information.
